Why the Kids in Need Fund?

Photo of young boy wearing a backpackImagine a child walking into his neighborhood school with a fresh haircut, wearing new clothes and carrying a backpack stuffed with the proper school supplies. This is a child ready to learn and be successful in school.

For over 52,000 FCPS students, the reality is much different. In the 2016-17 school year, 1 in every 4 FCPS students received free or reduced priced meals, an indicator that they, and their families, are living in poverty.

What the Fund Provides:

School Supply Kits

Backpacks

Coats/Shoes/Clothing

Giftcards for groceries or haircuts

Personal Hygiene items

Laptops & Computers

The Foundation for FCPS maintains a Kids in Need fund to assist our social workers and teachers in providing items to students in need. Here in Fairfax County, we are fortunate to have a robust network of non-profits, businesses, faith-based groups and individuals to support these students in their local schools. The Foundation’s work supplements that of our community partners which enables us to assist more students each year.

School Supply Kits

One way the Foundation supports kids in need is through providing school supply kits for them at back-to-school resource fairs, held at four high schools in August.Photo of student receiving school supply kit   At the resource fairs, students receive school supplies, meet teachers and principals, get free haircuts, vision and dental screening, plus visit a showcase of local community groups who can assist families in need with language services, food, job training, and much more.

We provided school supply kits to over 7,000 students in 2016.
